Focus

Module 4 is oriented towards students’ recognising, and responding to, the vital role sacraments have in mediating Christ’s presence and power to the world. 

Overview

Sacraments as extension of Incarnation; Divine presence through physical matter; Biblical bases; Grace flowing from the heart of Christ; Eucharist and Reconciliation at the Resurrection of Jesus; Saints Padre Pio and Gianna Molla; Rosary; Vocational focus through the Mysteries of Light; Vocation as gift and task.

Elaboration

Emphasising the sacramental system as an extension of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, and how through it flows the grace that was poured out as blood and water from the pierced heart of Jesus on the cross (cf. John 19:34), Module 4 will highlight the biblical and spiritual foundations of the seven Sacraments, and invite students to engage in learning about, and living them more fully, as a means of personal fulfilment and service to others. 

Streaming from the one wellspring of Divine grace through the Church, the Body of Christ, which is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, teachers will elucidate how sacraments (‘Sacramentum’ from Latin, which is the same as ‘Mysterion’ in Greek) mediate God’s presence in and through material creation – such as water (Baptism), oil (Confirmation and Anointing), bread and wine (Eucharist), and male and female human bodies (Marriage). Special accentuation will be made on the Eucharist and Reconciliation in Gospel accounts of the Resurrection, where “they recognised him in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35), and where he entrusted his priestly power to the Apostles so that “whose sins you forgive they are forgiven” (John 20:23). Case studies will be made of the interplay of faith and life in the examples of Saints Padre Pio and Gianna Molla. 

The prayer of the Rosary will be introduced and meditated upon, its Mysteries of Light highlighting the vocational states of life – Baptised laity, Marriage, Consecrated Celibacy, and Holy Orders – in a module that leads students to actively consider their own call to holiness, as both a gift given and a task to be taken up. 

Work Requirement

Research Assignment on a saint of the student’s choice (made with teacher's agreement), that highlights:

  • the historical context and key events of their life;
  • their virtues with reference to vital sayings or written advice;
  • the manner to which they lived a sacramental life (with particular focus on the role of the Eucharist for them);
  • the religious and cultural impact of their life on the world (that is, their legacy);
  • and the student’s personal response to the saint’s witness. 

The form of presentation is to be an essay of 800 words.

In this presentation Martin outlines the process for exploration of Year 11 Module 4: Sacraments – Presence of God. Through the process of reading and reflecting on the GNFL Syllabus document and the Module 4 Outline, teachers will familiarise themselves with the Focus of the Module, the Key Syllabus Content, the described learning sequence and will begin to prepare for their teaching of the Module. The video guides the exploration process undertaken by a teacher and / or a RE team.
